Wellness Policy Addendum

Nutritional Guidelines

All food offered at Lakeside will be centered on wellness promotion and reducing childhood obesity. Food and beverages provided through the National School Lunch or School Breakfast Programs comply with established federal nutrition standards, which can be found under the link Final Rule Nutrition Standards in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs – Jan. 2012.

Smart Snacks in Schools

Smart Snacks in Schools applies to the school campus, which is defined as all areas of the property under the jurisdiction of the school that are accessible to students during the school day. School Day is defined as the period from midnight to 30 minutes after the end of the official school day. All food/beverages offered for sale to students on the school campus will follow Smart Snacks in School guidelines. Classroom Parties and Celebrations

Classroom parties shall offer a minimal amount of foods (maximum 2-3 items) containing added sugar as the primary ingredient (e.g., cupcakes, cookies) and will provide the following:

Parents/Guardians shall be informed through newsletters or other efficient communication methods that food/beverages should only be brought in when requested for scheduled parties. When possible, food/beverages for parties and celebrations shall be provided by the food service department to help prevent food safety and allergy concerns. Possible options include food and beverages that are:

Food is not to be used as a classroom or school activity reward, unless the activity is health promoting.

Please reference the documents “Accommodating Children with Special Dietary Needs in the School Nutrition Programs” and “Medical Plan of Care for School Food Service” for food allergen-related questions and concerns.

Vegetarian meal options will be available daily as part of the reimbursable meal or a la carte.

Faculty

Staff are encouraged to be leaders on campus by setting a positive example for students. Students are more likely to believe and accept wellness policies if staff consume food and beverages that are in alignment with the school’s policies.
